Crores of taka were spent on building two government quarters with modern facilities at the Mirpur Upazila Health Complex premises in Kushtia in 2006. The complex has two types of quarters – one for specialist doctors and the other for medical officers.

But only a few doctors initially stayed there. Abandoned for more than a decade, the buildings now have the appearance of haunted houses from a distance.

The health facility was upgraded from 31 to 50 beds in 2006. At the time, two buildings – one three-storey and another two-storey – were constructed next to the hospital building for the doctors.

All kinds of facilities were kept in the buildings and the premises so the physicians could live there with their family members. It is learned that the doctors do not show interest mainly due to the high rent.

The hospital has 19 doctors, and 16 of them are posted here. Two others work in Union Healthcare Centres, and one is currently on deputation.

The housing complex has now become a quiet and isolated place, and the plasters are decaying.

On the other hand, people are stealing windows and small materials from the buildings due to a lack of supervision.

Mirpur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Piyush Kumar Saha said the rent of these flats was almost double that of those in the Sadar area. “We’ll refurbish the buildings if any doctor wants to stay here.”
